Frequently Asked Questions for the Online Academy

Q: What is The Mystery of History Online Academy?

A: Opening in 2016, this is a brand new joint venture between Bright Ideas Press (the publisher of The Mystery of History) and Linda Lacour Hobar (the author of The Mystery of History). The Online Academy offers live classes with the author (via the Internet), or self-paced classes available anytime through the school year (via Internet recordings of the live classes.)

Q: When will the Online Academy be available?

A: Weekly live classes with the author will run August 30, 2016 through May 2, 2017 (with some holidays built in.) Self-paced classes will be available starting September 6, 2016 through May 9, 2017. (To accommodate the recording and editing of the live classes, the self-paced classes will be offered one week behind the live sessions.)

Q: What courses will the Online Academy offer this school year (2016-2017)?

A: Our first course offering for 2016-2017 is The Mystery of History Volume III, “The Renaissance, Reformation, and Growth of Nations.” This rich and provocative time period, spanning 1455-1707, includes 84 lessons about explorers, artists, reformers, scientists, and numerous memorable events from around the world.

Q: What age is appropriate for The Mystery of History Online Academy?

A: To help students earn a high school credit in world history, we are only accepting 8th -12th graders for the live classes. Students of all ages and learning abilities are eligible for the self-paced option, though we don’t recommend students younger than 5th grade.

Q: What materials are needed for the course and are they included in tuition?

A: The Online Academy will be set up using all digital products! The essential products (the ebook versions of the Student Reader and Companion Guide) are included with tuition. At a discounted rate, Online Academy students may additionally purchase a hard copy textbook, atlases, audio book, and Super Supplementals (Challenge Cards, coloring pages, Notebooking Pages, & Folderbooks).

Q: Will parents need to be involved in the Online Academy?

A: Yes and no! Following a traditional homeschool philosophy, we believe that parents are ultimately responsible for issuing grades to their students and overseeing their progress. However, we make this easy for you! Both live students and self-paced students can take weekly online quizzes, which will be automatically graded. In addition, the Online Academy will provide a suggested grading rubric to encourage a good work ethic in all students and accountability to their parents.

Q: What will be the role of the author in these classes?

A: Linda Lacour Hobar will seek to teach students world history on a deeper level than that which is already provided in the textbook. Through her engaging style of teaching and warm personality, she will be providing additional information to her students through short lectures, Power Point slides, YouTube videos, surveys, white board drawings, question and answer formats, and much more. Students in her live classes will additionally benefit from peer interaction and direct access to the author for discussion. We feel that self-paced students can glean a great deal from these recorded sessions, though they will not be able to interact with each other or the instructor.

Q: Will the live class and the self-paced class cost the same?

A: No. Because live students will be able to personally interact with the author, live classes will cost more.

Q: When will the live classes meet?

A:Live classes will meet on Tuesdays at 10-11 am (CST) and 2-3 pm (CST). (You choose one class or the other until the classes are full.) A few calendar breaks will exist through the school year to allow for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break. A full course schedule is listed under a separate tab on the product page.

Q: What if my student can’t attend all the live classes?

A: Students enrolled in live classes that need to skip a class may view the recordings of the class at a later date. Students missing a high number of classes may be asked to drop the class to allow other students in.

Q: Are there class size limits?

A: Yes and no. Live classes will be limited to approximately 25 students per class. Self-paced classes have no class limit.

Q: What are the benefits of a live class?

A:

  • Live classes will appeal to students who greatly desire interaction with peer and a qualified instructor.
  • Though students will not be required to “speak in class,” participation will be encouraged. The class may equally appeal to over-achievers and those that need some healthy motivation.
  • Weekly reading of The Mystery of History IS required.
  • Parents with minimal time for teaching will find the Online Academy a safe partner and ally in the home education of their children.

Q: What are the benefits of a self-paced class?

A:

  • Self-paced classes are a good option for students 5th grade and up who are not necessarily seeking a high school credit (though 8-12th graders can with the format provided.)
  • Self-paced classes are an excellent choice for students who cannot attend Tuesday classes because of time zone differences or other schedule conflicts.
  • Parents with little time to teach will appreciate the additional instruction their students can receive without time restraints on their schedule.
